5 Clinically Proven Hair Growth Supplements [2018 Edition]

There are many different reasons why you might be looking at hair supplements. Perhaps your hair has always been thin and listless. Maybe you are beginning to notice some hair loss and want to stop it in its tracks. Or perhaps your hair is your crowning glory, and you simply want to help it look as big and bouncy as ever. Whatever your reason for researching hair growth supplements, one thing is for sure: no one wants to waste their time and money on a supplement that doesn’t work.

Hair growth supplements are a popular choice for both men and women that are dealing with thinning hair. Here we examine five clinically proven hair growth supplements with a track record for achieving measurable results:

In 2013, Viviscal conducted what was the then-largest  double-blind, multi-site, placebo-controlled clinical studies on women’s hair supplements. The results showed that Viviscal was effective at creating hair that felt fuller and thicker in women that were experiencing visibly thinning hair.

Viviscal is the only hair supplement to have been included in 10 separate clinical trials.

The active ingredients in Viviscal include Amino Mar C™ marine complex, which is a fish based product rich in protein. This is made up of 250 mg of shark cartilage, Oyster meat and vitamin C (meaning that the product isn’t suitable for vegetarians).  Other vitamins and minerals included are biotin and zinc, which have both been shown to promote healthy hair from within.

So how does Viviscal actually work? Well, it encourages hair growth and the generation of new cells by working with your natural hair growth cycle. This means that during its shedding phase you should notice less hair loss, and during the regeneration phase you should see your hair grow thicker and stronger.

Viviscal is a long term commitment rather than a quick fix. Manufacturers suggest that consumers should take the pills twice a day for at least six months in order to see noticeable results.

TRX2 is an innovative and advanced formulation that helps maintain normal hair using a unique combination of both biotin and potassium. Potassium is essential for hair growth and strength. By targeting the potassium channels within the hair folicles, TRX2 is able to get straight to the root of the problem and stimulate new hair growth where it has stopped completely.

The preliminary clinical research study of TRX2 found that after 9 months of active treatment (daily use) can significantly improve the look and feel of hair in both men and women, and In the randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 87% of people reported significant improvement after using TRX2.

TRX2 is one of the only supplements on the market proven to be effective at reversing complete hair loss.

TRX2 is effective for both men and women, and the clinical research has looked it is success for both. Considered to be a long term solution for hair loss, particularly those with alopecia, a double blind study of the supplement found that 89.6% of individuals within the active group experienced positive results. That means they had experienced at least a 10% increase in the number of hair strands, and in hair weight.

TRX2 is suitable for vegetarians and leaves users with no major side effects, no hormone interference, and provides an incredibly effective slow and steady solution to hair loss.

Provillus Hair Loss Solution

As well as being approved by the FDA, Provillus has also been clinically proven to be effective in reducing the impact of hair loss in both men and women. The company offers two separate products, based on the sex of the user.

Provillus is a two part product, combining an ingestible supplement with a liquid to apply directly to the scalp.

Provillus supplements for both men and women contains a huge number of active ingredients, such as palmetto, nettle root, zinc, biotin, vitamin B6 and uva-ursi. These have all been shown to be effective in improving the quality of the hair but cannot encourage new hair generation where hair loss is already being experienced.

The liquid aspect of Provillus has, however, been clinically proven to improve hair growth. It’s main ingredient is minoxidil which is an FDA-approved and MHRA-licenced treatment for hair loss. When a high dose of minoxidil is administered it has been proven in several trials to lead to hair growth in a large majority of people who try it.

Hairfinity Healthy Hair Vitamin Supplements

Hairfinity is a hair growth supplement targeted specifically at women. In a A Randomized, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled, 4-arm clinical study, the effectiveness of the product was assessed.

Over a 30 day period supplementation with the HairFinity product was found to reduce hair shedding and the speed of hair growth increased slightly, however it is important to note this study was conducted on women with healthy hair: the product is not intended to reverse or improve the appearance of hair loss.

So what are the active ingredients in Hairfinity? Well it contains a unique blend of vital vitamins and essential nutrients, such as biotin, amino acids, collagen boosting silica, and vitamins A, C, and D. These have all been shown to promote healthy hair, skin and nails, so they should make healthy hair look glossier and stronger. However there is no evidence that Hairfinity can help with hair growth after hair loss.

You may well have heard of Hairfinity thanks to its range of celebrity endorsements, particularly their high profile collaboration with Kim Kardashian and her sisters. Whilst celebrity endorsements should never be favoured over hard and fast clinical research, there is no denying that the Kardashians are women with great hair, which they attribute to their regular use of the product.

Procerin for Men

In clinical studies conducted on behalf of the brand, 94% of men experienced reduced hair loss when they were using Procerin. Because this product is targeted specifically at men it tends to focus on hair growth and regeneration.

Procerin claims to show result in just weeks, and work by blocking excess dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body, which is a common cause of male hair loss. It also stimulates new hair growth and encourages scalp growth.

In an IRB approved study conducted by the brand and promoted on their website, 94%of users agreed Procerin slowed hair loss, 93%would recommend it to friends and family, 90%of users were satisfied with Procerin. However it is important to note these figures are based on the participants perceived experience, rather than on measurable results (such as hair weight or amount of hair growth)

So what are the active ingredients in Procerin? 1500 mg of Saw Palmetto is the main active ingredient, designed to lower DHT levels. The product also contains significant amounts of magnesium and zinc.

It is important to note that this product is designed specifically to target testosterone related hair loss in men, and therefore it is unlikely that women using this product would experience any results.

When choosing a supplement to promote hair growth, one of the most important tools in your armory to help you make the right choice is the wide range of clinical research and studies available. Not only should these let you know how likely your chosen supplement is to work, they will also give you access to anecdotal evidence from current and former users, and give you an idea of how long the supplement will take to work.

Looking at the research conducted into the supplements you’re thinking of using should be an important first step before you commit to purchasing anything or adding it to your daily routine.
